With that said, there is still variance in how people play and all of the classes are balanced against each other. When I compared notes on Long War I was surprised to find out that not everybody outfits a mostly mech team (I used 2 Jaegers, 2 snipers, a medic, 2 scout-mechs and a maurader I think it was). X2 has a much stronger meta I think, with mimic beacons, delaying the avatar project, stasis spamming and beaglerushing. This has been replaced with stasis, which locks down an opponent completely for 1 turn. In Enemy Within and Long War I slammed disabling shots down on any sectopods that would survive into the enemy turn. Especially towards the end, letting one alien get a special move in can half health most of team. The major complaint that I and a lot of other people here have is that X2 strategically requires you to kill all enemies before they can act. This sense of urgency is diminished once you know the meta behind it, but it's a better feeling than the preventive "I must protect ALL the countries!" world plot of EW. The Avatar project (new doomsday meter) is dynamic, slowing/lowering based off how well you disrupt alien operations but always increasing. Hacking, while not a massive part of gameplay, is a good addition that adds more options (combat hacking, getting base resources from hacks in mission). The stealth mechanic I absolutely adore, since pod activation was always a rage point for me. You can't just outfit a team of jetpack snipers and breeze through the levels.

The detail that long war goes into exceeds Xcom 2 by a good deal (5 tech levels vs 3 and many more utility items) you're likely getting better value for money with LW. Long War had the longer campaign time by far (which I consider both a pro and a con). after all the DLC and after the modders have had more time to learn and experiment. There is some great stuff out there already but I suspect the real giant masterpiece mods will come in about a year's time, i.e. There are people who reckon they've managed to find a fairly LW-like balance. However, XCom2 mods are amazing and they are coming thick and fast (and free!). It is more consistently fun but it's less consistently satisfying. XCom 2 is great but it's not really as tactical as LW.

For people who get almost as much enjoyment from things like memorising the wiki, spending hours happily theory crafting soldier builds, or analysing a roster of 40 rookies with slightly different stats to work exactly out who will take what role. LW was designed for Xcom zealots who would dedicate a material portion of their lives to it. You don't get stuck in too many long firefights (without losing). XCom 2 was designed to have broad appeal and have you blast through enemies using big spectacular skills and items.
